IN BRIEF
First envisioned in 1900 by steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Mellon University has steadily built upon its foundations of excellence and innovation to become one of America's leading universities.

The university's unique approach to education-giving students the opportunity to become experts in their chosen field while studying a broad range of course work across disciplines-creates leaders and problem solvers for the changing marketplace of today and tomorrow.

HOUSING
Approximately 80 percent of students live in the university's traditional residence halls, apartment buildings, and fraternity, sorority and special interest houses. First year students are required to live on campus. Housing is guaranteed for four years, provided students remain in the university housing system.

ACTIVITIES
Student activities include more than 130 clubs, organizations, varsity, club and intramural sports, and fraternities and sororities. (Approximately 15 percent of students participate in Greek life.) A sampling of clubs and organizations include The Tartan newspaper, the Juggling Club, Amnesty International, Ballroom Dancing, the Robotics Club, The Thistle yearbook and the Kiltie Marching Band.

SPORTS
Carnegie Mellon is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes within the Division III University Athletic Association (UAA). Varsity sports include men's football, soccer, cross-country, basketball, track and field, golf, tennis, swimming and diving as well as women's soccer, cross-country, basketball, track and field, volleyball, tennis, swimming, diving, golf and cheerleading.

Club sports include baseball, bowling, crew, cycling, explorers, fencing, ice hockey, lacrosse, rugby, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. Over 40 intramural sports include everything from basketball and touch football to table tennis and water polo.
